Anxiety is created. It isn't something you're born with, it isn't a fixed personality trait, and it isn't simply "a chemical imbalance" you're stuck carrying for life. It's a response your mind and body built, usually earlier than you'd expect, as a form of protection against something that felt genuinely threatening at the time. Once that response is created, it runs automatically, in the background, without you choosing it each time. That's the real answer. Everything simpler than that is a summary, not an explanation.
Anxiety is your system doing its job: protecting you from a threat. The problem is that the "threat" it originally responded to may have been real once: a genuinely frightening moment, an unsafe situation, a pattern that repeated often enough to teach your system to stay alert. But the response it created has kept firing long after the original moment passed. You're not broken or overreacting. You're carrying a protective pattern that made sense when it was created and hasn't been told the danger has gone.
It's rarely one or the other in the way people assume. You can have a nervous system that's more reactive by nature, and that can make it easier for a pattern to take hold, but reactivity isn't the same as anxiety itself. The anxiety itself, the specific fear, the specific trigger, the specific way it shows up for you, is created by experience. Two people with the same "sensitive" temperament can live completely different lives depending on what actually happened to them and what pattern got built as a result.
"You're just stressed" and "it's a chemical imbalance" both describe what anxiety feels like in the body, not why it exists in the first place. They're not wrong exactly, they're incomplete. They explain the symptom, not the cause, which is why advice built entirely on those explanations tends to focus on getting you through the feeling rather than resolving what's producing it. If you've tried the breathing exercises and the supplements and still feel the same underlying dread, that's not a personal failure. It's a sign the explanation you were working from wasn't the whole picture.
Yes. The size of the anxiety you carry now has almost nothing to do with the size of the original moment that created it. A single afternoon, one sentence someone said, one experience that lasted minutes: any of these can be enough, if it landed at the right or wrong moment, in the right circumstances, for your system to decide it needed to protect you from that ever happening again. You don't need a dramatic backstory for the anxiety to be real, and you don't need to find something "big enough" to justify how much it's affecting you.
Because knowing why a pattern was created and actually un-creating it are two different processes. Insight is useful. It takes away the self-blame, and it usually explains a lot that never made sense before. But insight alone doesn't remove the pattern any more than knowing why a smoke alarm is faulty stops it going off. The pattern was built through experience, not through logic, which is why it has to be un-created the same way: directly, at the point it was formed, not talked around from the outside.
